Closet Spring Cleaning

Since Easter was this past weekend I feel as though it is now officially Spring. I realize that technically it has been Spring for a few weeks now, but in my mind the Easter holiday marks the beginning of this lovely season with pretty sundresses and pastel hues. I decided my closet needed a little Spring cleaning-- or rather my closet decided that it was in need of some cleaning on its' own. I came home the other day to a closet rack that fell off the wall, this disaster was the result:

Since my closet fell apart I was able to start with a completely clean slate, which I love. Now that it is Spring I took all of my jackets, sweaters and boots out of this closet and put them in my second one. Yes, I am very spoiled and have two closets.. three if you count my boyfriend's closet which I kind of took over!

I started with shoes first. I purchased these shoe organizers at Target, they were very inexpensive and I think they look nice. On the left side I did not add the middle shelf, this way I can put heels or wedges underneath. I did put the second shelf on the right side, this way I can store more flats.

The longer rack in my closet holds all of my shirts. Most professional organizers suggest organizing clothing by type first and then by color. I do the opposite I find that it just works better for me. I organize my closet by color, as best as I can, some things never seem to belong to any one color family (these items drive me crazy!). Then once everything is organized by color, I organize each color group starting with jackets, then sweaters, long sleeves, short sleeves, sleeveless, spaghetti straps and tube tops. On the rack above my shirts I keep my towels (I have no linen closet) and all of my jeans, which I also organize by color.

The right side of my closet contains a whole bunch of different things. I keep all of my dresses and skirts on this side. Above my dresses I have two fabric bins. The first contains swim suits and tights, (I know two random things to group together but it works for me). The second bin holds tote bags and cosmetic bags. Next I hang my scarves on a hanger, I look forward to collecting more bright Spring scarves (after my shopping ban, of course!). Lastly I have my two smaller cross-body bags hanging here.

The last section of my closet is used for my handbags and skirts. Unfortunately  I couldn't get the photo of my shelves to upload. My closet has built-in shelves which I love, I keep large purses on the top shelf, medium ones on the second shelf and on the third shelf I have this floral print fabric bin (obsessed!). I use this bin to hold smaller bags, clutches and wallets.

I hope this post gives you some motivation to give your closet a Spring-time spruce up. I love reorganizing my closet, I find it therapeutic and once I'm finished I look forward to picking out my outfits every morning. I also had a little help, I think they approve of the new closet arrangement:
